Hot n’ Funky: Red Bull Manny Mania Am Series Los Angeles err.. Long Beach

With abundant sunshine and beats bumping out the speakers, Red Bull Manny Mania Los Angeles put the feet of So Cal’s hot ams on the streets of downtown Long Beach. Taking place during the Long Beach Funk Fest, this Red Bull Manny stop had its own fresh vibe, with plenty of hot tricks to rival the hot weather.

Forty-four skaters turned out to hit a unique manual course in front of over 2000 skateboard enthusiasts. In addition to a barrage of technical tricks, fans were treated to a live half-time set by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, who freestyled right from the manny pad.

The finals were a heated battle between local favorite Steve Webb, previous Manny Am stop winner Spencer Brown and a relative unknown Bryant Chapo. Overcoming the mid-day sun, it was Chapo who came away with the victory and $2500. Chapo will be entered into the Red Bull Manny Mania digital finals, where he will compete for online votes against the 14 other Am series’ best to win a $7,000 prize back. Taking pride in his 100% Navajo heritage, Chapo is also the first full-blooded Native American to podium in the three-year history of Red Bull Manny.

Keeping things in line was “referee” Joey Brezinski, creator of the event concept and one of the best manual skaters out there. He donned the official striped shirt and whistle, but it was judges Jaime Owens of Skateboarder Magazine, pro skater Danny Montoya and legendary videographer Socrates Leal, who made the final judgment. For Bryant Chapo, there was no complaint about their choice, saying with a beaming smile, “I’m super stoked about winning! I came here just to place top five, and ended up taking the whole thing.”
